Into the Volcanoes

The Experience

This is Rwanda’s defining wildlife experience condensed into a single day. Leave Kigali before dawn and travel north toward Volcanoes National Park, where the Virunga mountains rise above the cultivated hills. At Kinigi, meet the park rangers for a briefing before entering the dense Afromontane rainforest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family.

The trek can take from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the gorillas’ location. Once the family is found, you spend one extraordinary hour observing silverbacks, mothers and young gorillas at close range before returning from the forest and beginning the journey back to Kigali.

The Itinerary

One days tracing the rhythm of the wild.

Into the Bamboo Forest

Depart Kigali at 5:00am, or Musanze at 6:00am, and travel to Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a short ranger orientation. From there, enter the bamboo forest in search of habituated golden monkey groups, which can number between 30 and 80 individuals.

Among the Golden Monkeys

Spend one hour observing the golden monkeys as they move through the bamboo, feed and interact at close range. The trek is generally shorter and less strenuous than gorilla trekking, making it a more accessible wildlife experience.

Leaving the Virungas

Return to the trailhead by around midday and begin the journey back toward Musanze or Kigali. The drive offers a final look at the Virunga landscape and Rwanda’s rolling hills before leaving the park region.

Afternoon at Leisure

Arrival back in Kigali is expected by approximately 2:00pm, so there is no formal evening programme. The remainder of the day is free for lunch, rest or another activity in the city.
