Lake Kivu experience
The Experience
Lake Kivu offers a completely different side of Rwanda — open water, volcanic hills, fishing villages and a slower rhythm. From Rubavu, travel by boat across the lake to Napoleon Island, home to a large colony of African fruit bats, with time for swimming and a relaxed lakeside lunch.
The journey is calm, scenic and refreshingly different from Rwanda’s forest and wildlife experiences. Wide lake views, local life along the shore and the surrounding hills make this an ideal full-day escape from Kigali.
The Itinerary
One days tracing the rhythm of the wild.
Across Lake Kivu
Depart Kigali early and drive west to Rubavu on the northern shore of Lake Kivu. On arrival, board a private boat and cruise across the lake toward Napoleon Island, known for its large colony of African fruit bats. Enjoy wide views across the water toward the surrounding volcanic hills.
Lunch on the Lake
Continue across the lake for a swimming stop in clear, fresh water before heading to the island restaurant. Enjoy a relaxed lunch featuring fresh local fish while taking in the lake views. After lunch, spend some time on the water before beginning the return journey toward Rubavu.
Exploring Lake Kivu
Continue exploring Lake Kivu by boat, passing small islands, fishing communities and the green hills along the shoreline. Depending on time and conditions, enjoy another short stop on the lake before returning toward Rubavu. The slower pace gives you time to take in the scenery and atmosphere of Rwanda’s western lakeside region.
Return to Kigali
Return to Rubavu in the late afternoon and begin the drive back to Kigali. The journey takes approximately two and a half hours, with arrival in the city around 7:00pm. After a full day on the lake, return to your hotel for the evening.
