THE EXPERIENCE

Rwanda’s only savannah park. Big Five country. Two hours from Kigali, and without the crowds of the Mara or Kruger. Akagera is one of Africa’s great conservation success stories — lions reintroduced in 2015, black rhino in 2017, elephant numbers growing steadily, and a landscape that is visually distinct from anything else in Rwanda. Rolling savannah, acacia woodland, and a chain of lakesnalong the Tanzania border provide the backdrop for game drives that consistently surprise visitors who expected something smaller. Three days is the right amount of time to settle in and do the park justice.

Itinerary

Morning transfer east to Akagera (approx. 2 hrs), arriving for an afternoon game drive. The eastern shoreline of Lake Ihema is one of the most productive areas in the park — hippo, crocodile, elephant, and giraffe are common sightings. Sundowner at the lakeside. Dinner at the camp.

Pre-dawn departure for the best light and predator activity — Akagera’s lion prides are most active at first light. Midday rest at camp. Afternoon: a two-hour boat cruise on Lake Ihema — hippo pods at close range, Nile crocodile, African fish eagle, and 480+ recorded bird species on the water around you.

Final early morning game drive before the heat. Transfer back to Kigali, arriving midday. Time for a city lunch before onward travel.
