Where does gorilla trekking take place?

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda takes place in Volcanoes National Park, in the northwest of the country. The park forms part of the Virunga mountain range and is home to several habituated gorilla families that can be visited by small groups of travellers.

What happens on the trekking day?

The trekking day normally starts early in the morning with a briefing from park rangers. Visitors are then divided into groups and assigned a gorilla family. The trek can take from around one hour to several hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. The route may include steep, muddy and uneven forest paths, so a reasonable level of fitness is helpful.

Once the gorillas are found, visitors are allowed to spend a limited period observing them. This quiet time in the forest is often the highlight of the entire journey.

How much is a gorilla permit?

A gorilla permit is required for every visitor. The permit includes park entry, ranger guidance and the gorilla trekking experience. Permit prices and regulations can change, so it is important to confirm the latest information before booking your trip.

What should you bring?

Gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year. The drier months generally provide easier walking conditions, while the wetter periods offer very green scenery and fewer visitors. Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so rain is possible at any time.
